Artist profile

I’m a ceramic artist, based in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand. I work out of the best-ever studio at Moturoa, below Tiger Town Cafe, where I make one-of-a-kind sculptural pieces and dining ware, including cups, plates, and bowls. I make a lot of other stuff too, not just in clay, which is hard to neatly summarise. I teach wheel pottery and handbuilding classes and workshops from my studio.

How to describe my work? Raw, textured, experimental, lively and plenty of colour. My ideas are constantly changing and evolving. I like exploring form, tension, imbalance, texture and emotion. My sculptural pieces take up space and demand attention.

I first took up pottery when living in Tochigi-ken in Japan teaching English in the late 90s. So yeah, I think I am influenced by the Japanese aesthetic and concept of wabi sabi, finding beauty in imperfection, though not in a pretty prissy kind of way. I also dabble in jewellery, print-making, making inks and charcoal.  Years ago I completed a Diploma of Fine Arts from Otago Polytechnic School of Art, majoring in sculpture.

If you're in New Plymouth and looking for some good quality pottery, come and check out my studio (498a St Aubyns st). I'm usually open on a Friday. Or email me [email protected] to make an appointment and for pottery classes info.
